Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History

This is one of my favorite quotes. EVER. It speaks to my soul. It’s been attributed to several different ladies throughout the years, ladies that I admire like Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Eleanor Roosevelt.

So, my PSA for the day is… just because you saw it on the book of faces does not make it true. In fact, in today’s society, I am often hyper-suspicious of the crap I see on FB, so I take some extra time to fact-check shit. I was a History major in college; research is in my blood, people.

So when I did a little digging, I found out who truly coined this phrase and was surprised to learn that the intent of the author was actually to encourage well-behaved women to make history, not necessarily to encourage women to rebel or be less “well-behaved.” But, as often happens, the quote got a life of its own.

So today, I want to set the record straight and attribute the quote to its original author, Laurel Thatcher Ulrich and to give it my own homage. I would have loved to take a class with this lady. Alas, I never got accepted at Harvard.

Enjoy and remember to keep misbehaving and to keep fact-checking!
